Lower School Curriculum

The Lower School curriculum focuses on fundamentals that provide an unshakable base for future learning. A variety of teaching methods are used to engage students in learning and stimulate critical thinking. The heart of the Lower School academic program is development of students’ ability to read and write. In the early grades, students learn to approach reading with confidence. By the third grade, students are exposed to a variety of literary genre and are able to discuss themes, compare and contrast writing styles, and express their opinions. Through various writing projects, students develop fundamental skills and experience the joy of creative self-expression.

The Lower School’s math and science programs build on the natural curiosity of children. Our talented teachers guide students in vibrant lessons that engage them in the process of experimenting, manipulating materials, and making new discoveries. Math for Foundation (kindergarten) students includes simple addition and subtraction, working with coins and telling time. These skills will be further developed in 1st grade and mastered in 2nd grade. Multiplication and division begin in the 2nd grade and are further developed in the 3rd and 4th grades.

Our comprehensive curriculum also includes social studies, French, art appreciation, music, library, computer technology and physical education. Students master basic skills in a learning environment that encompasses structure and creativity, individual effort and teamwork. Additionally, character education is woven throughout the curriculum to foster values of kindness, respect, responsibility and fairness.
