||We believe there is a need for a developmental transition between the traditional elementary school style classrooms in our Lower School and the more advanced subject-specific schedule of our Upper School. For this reason the Ridgefield Academy Middle School consists of grades 4 and 5.
Middle School students have a dedicated wing of the Annex building, and they move between classrooms during the school day, gaining independence and responsibility. We gradually expand the social experiences in these years to help students grow into the more complex life of the Upper School.
In Middle School students begin to develop their public speaking skills, performing onstage alone for the first time. They choose an instrument to play in the band. Middle School students enjoy engineering challenges like the annual egg drop contest. They create Claymation and other videos for ancient history classes. During Middle School physical education expands to include intramural sports.
