||The Ridgefield Academy Upper School consists of grades 6, 7, and 8. Students in these grades are expected to become leaders within the school community. During the first week of school each year the Upper School students co-sign, with their parents, an Upper School Pledge, which outlines the role model behavior we value at RA. By eighth grade the students are responsible for running the school-wide Monday morning assemblies. Each eighth grade student is assigned a kindergarten student to mentor.
Upper School students are treated to a wide range of academic, artistic, and social opportunities so that they may develop strong study habits and discover their interests. Students may study computer science, robotics, visual art, music, athletics, health, and foreign language in addition to their work in the core subjects of English, history, math, and science. Science curriculum includes the Innovation Lab, which allows students hands-on experience in computing and engineering. English classes incorporate the Harkness Table method, a seminar style approach to discussing literature. Every spring the Upper School mounts a full-length musical, complete with sets and costumes. Our Service Learning program includes guest speakers and visits to area charities.
We work with our Upper School students to make sure they enter secondary schools poised to succeed and ready to take advantage of new opportunities. (See Secondary School Placement.)
