Beginning with Kindergarten, and extending through Middle School, we strive to instill a love for reading, an appreciation of books, and understanding of the vast information resources available to students. Each week children will spend a designated class period in the library. They start with learning the basics – how a library is organized, the components of a book, and how to select a book that is right for them. As students progress, they learn about different authors and illustrators and explore various types of literature (e.g., fiction, non-fiction, fables, poetry, mysteries, etc.). Resources available for research skills (e.g., the dictionary, encyclopedias, the atlas and almanac) are introduced and used throughout the library curriculum as well.

In addition to learning how to find, access and evaluate information resources, students gain an appreciation for a good story. They learn how to identify the main and supporting characters in a book, the sequencing of a story and how to compare and contrast story elements. Discussions about books begin with read-aloud and story-time and progress to book talks and participation in the Nutmeg Award.

Library activities are closely tied to the classroom curriculum. The library is used to reinforce and mirror what is being taught in the classrooms. A topic being studied in class (for example, penguins in Foundation) will be used to help differentiate fiction vs. non-fiction during their library period. As a result, the library lessons not only cover library concepts, but they reinforce classroom concepts as well.

Through both our library and computer technology programs, students learn about information available on the Internet. Special attention is given to helping them learn how to identify appropriate and accurate information, as well as how to balance the use of traditional print and electronic media when performing research.

Our library is an inviting and comfortable place for students to spend time. They know they are always welcome – whether to find help with locating the right material for a research project, or to simply find the perfect book for an afternoon read.
