At Ridgefield Academy, we believe physical education is an important part of a student’s overall development. In Lower School each student is given the opportunity to express, challenge, and most importantly, learn about their physical strengths and abilities. All activities in the program are developmentally appropriate and designed to help the children explore spatial orientation, refine their motor skills, develop their eye-hand coordination, and discover body awareness, balance and rhythm. They will also come to appreciate the concepts and benefits of good sportsmanship, teamwork, safety and promoting a healthy lifestyle, while having fun in the process. Students in Lower School participate in physical education classes three times per week.
The Middle School curriculum is more sports-oriented than in Lower School. In addition to age appropriate physical games and activities, specific instructional units expose our students to the sports they will encounter in Upper School. After learning different skills, small games and scrimmages allow students to take part in game-like situations. Concepts of offensive and defensive strategies are introduced, while teamwork and sportsmanship are stressed. Our Blue-White intramural program after school affords students the opportunity to play against their classmates in a competitive, yet instructional, atmosphere.
Our outdoor facilities include a state-of-the-art synthetic turf field and a new baseball and softball field, both overlooking one of the most spectacular views in Ridgefield. Our gymnasium includes a climbing wall and a full-court gymnasium for our instructional program.
