A Look at What's Happening at Landmark...

“Souper Bowl” Feb 3rd & 4th

As the day of the big game approaches, we will be taking advantage of this opportunity to once again reach out to those in our community who may need a helping hand. This time the theme is soup. Each classroom will have a collection box, and children are asked to bring a can (or more if you like) of soup. We will donate all soup to the Connecticut Food Bank, which distributes supplies throughout our region. The children will use the cans of soup in class for some math activities before we send them on their way, counting, sorting, etc…. So we can learn all about what kind of soup our friends and teachers like to eat. To add to the fun, on the 3rd & the 4th the children are encouraged to wear sports jerseys (football or any other sport).

Yale University Study

Due to recent inclement weather, we have had to reschedule the last day of our time with the visiting team from Yale University’s Social Cognitive Development Lab. They will be visiting our campus on February 2nd to work with our students and learn more about the ways young children think about their world. Participation in the study is voluntary, and your written permission is required for your child to participate in the study. Please review the information packet that was sent home in your child’s back pack regarding the study, and return to your child’s teacher letting us know whether or not you would like your child to participate. If you have any questions, or need another copy of the packet, please call our office. 203-226-6982.

Looking for something fun to do during spring break?

Well look no further than Landmark Preschool! Last year, our spring break camp was such a success that we'll be offering it once again this year. Ones Fun and Maternity Leave Teacher, Dr. Mia Mercurio-Morse, known to Landmark as Ms. Mia has planned two weeks of fun and entertainment for children in our Threes through Kindergarten programs.

The week of March 14th our theme will be "The Luck of the Irish: A Celebration of All Things Green!" The week of March 21st our theme will be "Let's Welcome Spring."  A flyer and registration form were sent home in your child’s folder, if you did not receive these forms, you can download both the Flyer and the Registration here.  For more information, please contact the main office at 203-226-6982.

Nintendo Wii Drive

Help children fighting cancer pass the time while receiving chemotherapy and blood transfusions...

TeamBrent is collecting new and used Wii games and controllers for the Yale Pediatric Oncology transfusion room.  Thanks to a generous donation, the Yale University Pediatric Department - Hematology/Oncology Section (aka "Dr. Joe's office) has received a Nintendo Wii System for their office.  This game system will be placed in the transfusion room to entertain and engage children as they receive blood transfusions or chemotherapy; which can sometimes take numerous consecutive hours.  Help us turn your new and gently used games/controllers into hours of fun for kids battling cancer.  For your convenience, there will be a donation box located in the Landmark main office during the upcoming weeks.

TeamBrent was created by the McCreesh family,  whose son Brent, a Landmark alumni,  was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at a very young age. Thanks to innovative treatments, Brent is doing well.

TeamBrent represents an outpouring of community support for Brent and other childhood cancer patients and survivors, and organizes events in our community to help with this great cause. One of their most popular events is the St. Baldrick’s Day event where volunteers can shave their heads to raise money for cancer research. This year’s event will take place on April 10th at Harbor Yard.  For more information on this worthwhile cause, go to www.teambrent.com

Five's Find Fantastic Fun From Fairytales!

Mrs. Carroll's Fives Class has been having a great month studying fairy tales.  Today, in Technology, the Five's had a chance to write their own fairy tale, using the SmartBoard and MAD LIBS (remember those?).  While they were giggling and having fun creating their story; they were also learning about nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives.  We'd thought you might enjoy reading their results! Please note, the Fives contributions are highlighted in yellow.

Jack and The Beanstalk
Jack and his mother were so poor that they only had two old horseshoes.   Jack's mother sent him to the market to sell them for some socks.  Jack ran into a strange woman and traded her for some magic cookies.  Jack planted them, and soon, there was a sleepy stalk growing from the ground.  Jack climbed up the stalk and reached a dumb castle.  He started to burp when he heard the sound of giant approaching.  A voice boomed, "Fee Fi Fo Fum, I smell the knees of an Englishman!"  The goofy giant chased him down the beanstalk, which Jack cut with an ax.  Luckily, Jack stole the giant's goose that laid golden pickles for him and his mother.

Once Upon a Time...
Once upon an Alex in the kingdom of Disney World, there lived an ugly adventurer named Mrs. Carroll.  The kingdom of Disney World was a peaceful kingdom, where the unicorns roamed free and the pasta was plentiful.  Ruling over the kingdom was dumb King Nicklaus, who became king when he pulled the magical book from its place in the carpet.  Everyone was dumb in Disney World, until one day when the beautiful villan named Mrs. Gaskin snuck into Nicklaus' castle and stole the sacred book.  King Nicklaus was instantly skipped from his throne, and he wandered the countryside for 9 days not knowing what to burp.  Finally, he met Mrs. Carroll, and explained the fat situation.  Mrs. Carroll told Nicklaus not to worry, and set off to recover the magical book.  Mrs. Carroll found Mrs. Gaskin in the castle, laughing quickly as his ferocious lion guarded the magical book.  Mrs. Carroll thought for a moment, then exclaimed, "LOOK! It's a gigantic teacher!!"  And while Ms. Gaskin and the gigantic lion were looking away, Mrs. Carroll grabbed the book and raced back to King Nicklaus.  Nicklaus was so grateful that he gave Mrs. Carroll a solid gold crazy cow. And Ms. Gaskin was given a 100-minute time-out.  The end.
