Ridgefield Academy’s Lower School is for students in Kindergarten - Third Grade. Young students begin their primary education within a supportive and stimulating environment that makes learning a joyful experience. Students feel confident, happy and enthusiastic about school because in our classrooms every student is valued, encouraged and inspired to excel. Our 9:1 student to teacher ratio allows caring, family-like relationships to be fostered between our talented and nurturing teachers who help students become eager learners that are excited by new challenges.
Our students master basic skills through a comprehensive academic curriculum of math, phonics, spelling, science, social studies, foreign language and computer technology. Our focus on fundamentals gives students an unshakable foundation for future learning, especially in the critical areas of reading and writing.
Students grow to appreciate reading with confidence and experience the joy of writing as creative expression. The core curriculum is enhanced by our rich art and music programs designed to give students both hands-on learning opportunities as well as an overall appreciation of the arts. Physical education is also an important and integral part of our program and rounds out the Lower School education.
As Lower School students go through their school day, values of
respect, honesty, fairness and kindness are reinforced both inside and
outside the classroom. Students from the Middle School help and
interact with Lower School students, acting as role models and helping
our younger students put their new skills into practice. These same
values are reinforced through community service projects that are
undertaken throughout the year.
Most importantly, our Lower School students learn how to learn.
Independent thinking and problem solving skills will prepare them well
as they move through Lower School, into Middle and Upper School and in
their everyday experiences outside of the classroom.
