The Gigantic Inflatable Waterslide at Ridgefield Academy's Patriot Camp

Summer is a great time for children to explore activities they are passionate about, develop skills they can use in the classroom in the fall and even learn the soft skills sought after by employers and secondary schools. According to a RAND Corporation study, high quality summer learning programs boost student achievement and their positive effects endure for two years after the engagement in the program occurred (McCombs et al., 2011).

RA’s Patriot Camp provides an opportunity for children in kindergarten through Grade 5 to engage in numerous opportunities to integrate both physical activity and educational challenges. Patriot Camp teachers (many of them RA instructors during the school year) seize the time and flexibility inherent during the summer months to develop innovative instructional approaches and apply them in teaching the themed weeks of Patriot Camp.

A typical day of summer camp at RA is anything but ordinary! There are just two more weeks of camp left. During the week of July 15-19 Camp Invention will provide hands-on STEM challenges and learning about world-changing inventions. Campers will embark on four fun adventures:

  • As a member of Innovation Force, defeat Plagiarizer, a supervillain out to steal the world’s ideas

  • Invent island-survival tools and underwater equipment used to better study marine life in Deep Sea Mystery

  • Play the role of a farmer tackling the real-world economic challenges of running an agricultural business and program a robot to conduct the practical tasks of running a farm In Farm Tech

  • Reverse-engineer a remote-controlled Orbot and explore frequency, circuit boards, motors, and gears and have their own robot participate in challenges involving art, sports, and more in DIY Orbot

Running the week of July 22 - July 26, Cupcake Wars & Traditional Day Camp will be a perfect time for children who love to bake! In this half-day, hands-on session, campers will be divided into teams and will work together to follow the cupcake daily cupcake theme.  They will:

  • Bake their cupcakes from scratch in the Kitchen Lab

  • Decorate cupcakes incorporating a new technique taught that day

  • Learn techniques used by the pro’s, such as using fillings and frostings to using pastry bags to handling and applying fondant

  • Design a presentation for the judges

  • Take their creations home each day to enjoy

After baking, each camp day will offer an array of traditional day camp activities such as Bingo, tie dying, scavenger hunts, charades, crazy relay races, cooking, and a trip or two to Barlow Mountain pool.

Another benefit to learning through fun: instead of the loss of learning, termed “summer slide,” that many children experience during the vacation months, Patriot campers enjoy a slide of a different sort - the gigantic inflatable water slide!

Camp hours are from 9am to 3:30pm with the option of extended care beginning at 8:00am and continuing until 5:00pm (additional charges apply).
