Middle School

Grades 4 and 5

Ridgefield Academy Middle School Science Class Experiment

Welcome to the Middle School at Ridgefield Academy!

If you walk the halls of the Annex building on our beautiful campus you will feel the buzz of joyful, purposeful learning. You will see our Middle School students actively engaged in their learning, building essential skills and working collaboratively, as they develop their independence within our vibrant school community.

Grades 4 and 5 mark an important transition between our Lower (Grades 1-3) and Upper (Grades 6-8) Schools as students learn to move between classrooms, navigate the campus buildings, seek extra help from teachers, and manage their materials with increasing independence. Most importantly, these years support our students in developing their academic skills, character, and sense of self as learners. Our fourth graders learn the ropes of the Middle School by navigating between two primary classrooms with regular visits to foreign language, science, visual arts, performing arts, and technology classrooms. Our fifth graders move about the building with confidence, traveling to each of their academic classes. Middle School students are engaged in their learning, actively participating in classroom discussions, experiments, and activities all in the context of supportive and caring relationship with their teachers.

Building on a strong foundation established in the Lower School, technology, performing arts, visual arts and athletics are an invaluable component of our well-rounded program. Our students are exposed to a wide variety of visual arts media and digital arts opportunities, and all students participate in drama, chorus, and instrumental band. As a build-up to the interscholastic athletic program in the Upper School, physical education for Middle School students is sport-specific with a wide array of sports offerings.

Our wonderful faculty are experts on the developmental ages of their students, Clinton Howarth - Head of Middle and Upper Schooland successfully support their personal and academic growth in and out of the classroom.
